Provincial changes now allow cannabis consumption in designated public spaces, creating new growth opportunities for B.C.'s cannabis industry.
The B.C. government announced last month that cannabis consumption will be permitted on public patios, a move celebrated by Thompson-Okanagan retailers. The Liquor and Cannabis Regulation Branch aims to enhance hospitality and tourism opportunities for the cannabis industry through gradual changes.
Mariana Wolff, owner of Penticton Cannabis Cottage, expressed relief over the new flexibility. “It feels like we’re getting a little bit more rope,” Wolff said. Licensed retailers can now offer consumption patio spaces, respecting current smoking bylaws.
Unity Cannabis, with locations in Penticton, Williams Lake, Merritt, and Lac La Hache, also welcomes the change. General Manager Dylan Sellars sees this as a positive step for the industry. “It will help show how many people use cannabis for recreational and medical purposes,” Sellars said. He believes it will reduce stigma and allow for more events and brand promotions.
Previously, cannabis users had to be discreet about their consumption. Sellars hopes this change will alter public perception. “Up until this point, you’ve been having to hide where you’ve been smoking,” he said.
Wolff hopes that public consumption spaces will demonstrate safe cannabis use and provide an alternative to alcohol. “It’s another substance that you can still get your fun buzz out of, but you don’t have to deal with the hangover,” she said. She believes this step is essential for the industry’s growth.
Cannabis consumption is still prohibited inside stores, and licensees must ensure that consumption near their stores does not extend into their establishments.
